Gites Escargot

This uniquely shaped holiday rental home in the south west of France is designed in the form of a spiral or “escargot”.

It has a total floor space of 100m2 over of 2 storeys and comprises an open plan kitchen and living room with small bathroom on the ground floor and 2 bedrooms on the upper floor.

It benefits from using a harmonious combination of natural materials designed to compliment each other, providing a habitat which is both aesthetically pleasing and highly thermally efficient.

Built with a Douglas fir timber frame, the walls are constructed from straw bales tied to the frame and finished with a thick coat of earth plaster applied both internally and externally.

The roof covering is traditional thatch made from reeds tied onto a wooden lattice nailed to the roof rafters.
The building is orientated to the south to maximise solar gain whilst a small wood burning stove is used for additional heating and hot water.

The building benefits from being exceptionally insulated with 45cm thick straw bales in the walls, floor.

Music Centre, Bordeau

This is a design and presentation proposal for a 400m2 commercial music recording centre comprising 3 recording studios, 2 teaching rooms, a reception and shop area, offices and technical rooms.

The buildings design is aimed to maximise the use of natural building materials and sustainable technologies helping to create a healthy and comfortable working environment as well as reduce day to day running costs.

The out walls use large dense straw bales for their natural thermal and acoustic properties, required to isolate the building phonically from the buildings external environment.

Careful detailing based on specialised acoustical design ensures that the natural and conventional materials and techniques are combined effectively to achieve the high level of professional acoustical standards qualities required for a modern recording facility.
